Well I tried Photomodeler lite - it really is a nice program. I downloaded the full version demo but haven't loaded it yet. Even if it is a 100% better than the lite version I don't know if I could justify (as a Hobbiest) the 895 doolar cost.
The way I look at it the program cuts out the first few steps in makeing a model - possibly the first 3 out of 10. Then you have to go back and tweek it, refine the textures, refine the groups etc.. But for an object that you want to turn into a model whether it's a staue or a house it does get you started.

Found a new program today -- hope it does what I want. it is called photomadeler lite and the addres is [link]

its a demo of a program called photomodeler -- price on the full version is 895 ouch; a little pricy for the average hobbyist but I'll see how it works out.
